Olmoti Crater is a shallow volcanic caldera located at approximately 3,080 m in the Ngorongoro Highlands, about 13 km north of the main crater rim. Its name, derived from the Maasai word for “cooking pot,” reflects its rounded, sunken shape. The crater floor is covered in grasslands and intersected by the Munge River, which forms the stunning Munge Waterfall before flowing into the Ngorongoro Crater.

A hike to Olmoti’s rim—typically taking 30–40 minutes to ascend and 25–30 minutes to descend—is a highlight of any Ngorongoro Highlands excursion. Along the way, you’ll traverse lush forests, highland grasslands, and rocky outcrops, with sweeping views over the crater and surrounding valleys. The trail culminates in a viewpoint showcasing grazing wildlife like eland, waterbuck, and buffalo against a backdrop of dramatic landscapes.
