Rubondo Island National Park

Rubondo Island National Park sits in the southwestern corner of Lake Victoria and is Tanzania’s only island national park of its scale — the largest of its kind in Africa. Spanning approximately 457 km², the park is a unique combination of forested island and surrounding freshwater, featuring lush rainforests, papyrus swamps, rocky shores, and sandy beaches. Established in 1977, Rubondo remains uninhabited and pristinely preserved, offering a rare wilderness experience.

What makes Rubondo truly special is its successful history of species introductions. In the 1960s, chimpanzees, elephants, giraffes, and other species were introduced and have since adapted to the wild. Today, visitors may encounter hippos, sitatungas, colobus monkeys, crocodiles, vervet monkeys, and over 300 bird species — making Rubondo a haven for wildlife enthusiasts, birders, and nature lovers seeking an off-the-grid adventure.
