Saanane Island National Park

Located just off Mwanza’s shores in Lake Victoria, Saanane Island National Park is Tanzania’s smallest and most accessible national park, covering approximately 2.2 km². Originally established as a zoo in 1964 and upgraded to national park status in 2013, Saanane offers a unique blend of nature, wildlife, and lakefront scenery right at the edge of the city. It’s an ideal destination for day trips, educational visits, and peaceful escapes with panoramic views of Lake Victoria.

Despite its compact size, the park is home to a surprising variety of wildlife including impalas, zebras, velvet monkeys, rock hyraxes, wild cats, and the only population of De Brazza’s monkeys in Tanzania. Reptiles like monitor lizards, pythons, and tortoises also thrive here, alongside over 40 bird species. With its walkable terrain and relaxed environment, Saanane offers an enriching wildlife experience just minutes from Mwanza city center.
