The Rongai Route is the only trail that approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the north, offering a quieter and more scenic ascent. This route takes you through lush rainforests and past the striking Mawenzi volcano, Tanzania’s second-highest peak. Its gradual elevation gain supports better altitude acclimatization, increasing your chances of safely reaching Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters.

With success rates of 85% for a 6-day climb and up to 90% for 7 days, Rongai is ideal for trekkers with prior high-altitude experience who prefer less crowded paths. Spanning approximately 65 kilometers (40 miles), it’s a rewarding challenge that combines solitude, striking landscapes, and the thrill of conquering Africa’s highest summit.

No matter your arrival time at Kilimanjaro International Airport, a friendly TmT driver-guide will be waiting to greet you with a warm welcome. Sit back and relax during the comfortable transfer to your hotel in Arusha or Moshi, Tanzania’s safari gateway city. En route, enjoy a brief introduction to the vibrant local atmosphere. A pre-trek briefing may take place upon arrival or early the next morning, depending on your arrival schedule.

After breakfast and a thorough trek briefing at the hotel, drive to Nalemuru Gate (2,020 m), the northern access point to Kilimanjaro National Park. Following permit procedures, begin your trek through peaceful forested paths, steadily gaining altitude en route to Simba Camp (2,625 m). Your first night on the mountain includes a warm meal and prepared tents at camp.

  • Elevation Gain: 2,020 m to 2,625 m

  • Distance: 8 km

  • Time: 3–4 hours

  • Habitat: Rainforest

After breakfast, depart Simba Camp and head toward Kikilewa Camp (3,630 m), with scenic views of the Kibo Volcano along the way. Today’s trail is steeper and more physically demanding, but the reward is panoramic vistas and a peaceful, remote camp. Rest and hydration are key for acclimatization at this new altitude.

  • Elevation Gain: 2,625 m to 3,630 m

  • Distance: 10 km

  • Time: 5–6 hours

  • Habitat: Heath

Continue your climb to Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,310 m), set beneath the rugged spires of Mawenzi Volcano. After lunch and rest, take a short acclimatization hike to about 4,510 m before returning to camp. This vital step boosts your body’s readiness for higher altitudes.

  • Elevation Gain: 3,630 m to 4,310 m

  • Acclimatization Hike: Up to 4,510 m

  • Distance: 6 km + 2 km acclimatization

  • Time: 4–5 hours + 1–2 hours

  • Habitat: Alpine Desert

Today’s trek crosses the barren Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks, leading to School Hut Camp (4,715 m). Although not overly steep, conserving energy is vital ahead of tonight’s midnight summit attempt. Upon arrival, hydrate, rest, and prepare mentally and physically for summit night.

  • Elevation Gain: 4,310 m to 4,715 m

  • Distance: 9 km

  • Time: 5–6 hours

  • Habitat: Alpine Desert

Around midnight, begin your final ascent to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), guided and supported every step of the way. Arrive at the summit by sunrise, take in the breathtaking views, and optionally visit nearby glaciers. After celebrating, descend to Kibo Camp for a break before continuing down to Horombo Camp (3,720 m) for a well-earned rest.

Important: Most trekking injuries occur during descent. Take care of your footing and protect your toenails.

  • Elevation Change: 4,715 m to 5,895 m to 3,720 m

  • Distance: 21 km

  • Time: 12–14 hours

  • Habitat: Arctic conditions to Heath Zone

After breakfast, begin your final descent through lush rainforest to Marangu Gate (1,860 m). Celebrate your achievement, sign the climbers’ register, and receive your official summit certificate. Your driver will then transfer you back to your hotel for a hot shower, hearty meal, and a cold Kilimanjaro beer.

  • Elevation Loss: 3,720 m to 1,860 m

  • Distance: 18 km

  • Time: 5–6 hours

  • Habitat: Rainforest

Depending on your flight schedule, enjoy some relaxation or explore Arusha/Moshi before your transfer to Kilimanjaro or Arusha Airport. Depart Tanzania with unforgettable memories and a profound sense of achievement.
